Birthday Calculator

One of my hobbies is genealogy. I have seen several "birthday calculator" software packages that estimate a person's date of birth based on their age on several dated documents. Instead of paying for that software, I would like to figure out the formula and either use an Excel spreadsheet, or maybe even make a nifty front-end in Objective-C and have a standalone piece of software.

So, what would the multiple variable formula representing a probable month and year of birth look like?

Well, let's say I have a ship manifest with a date and an age. You can't just count backwards because they could be 3.1 years old, or 3.9 years old. If you have multiple documents (ship manifest, census report, death certificate, etc.) with a date and an age you can narrow the DOB down to a range of months in a year. I think it would be a multiple regression formula with a range as an answer, but I'm not sure how to set it up.

We had an interesting time interpreting a relatives age since she had two census ages, one before marriage and one after. Curiously enough, she showed up as younger after she got married - no doubt to look younger than her husband - at least on paper.
